Jeep was burgled again this afternoon at work. Glove compartment pried open, p rescription sunglasses and a nice flashlight gone.

I could either buy another pair of sunglasses (I have expensive prescriptions) or buy some Tuffy security products. I’m going with the latter.

I assume the thief did not know the sunglasses had prescription lenses.

Will this deter theft, or just encourage a thief to rip our the box with a crow bar because something valuable must be in there?  I just don’t know.

I’d agree that having a lockbox might promote theft. It indicates that there is or that there could be something worth stealing. If the glovebox was left unlocked, the thief may have just opened it and thrown everything on the floorboards. If it’s locked shut, they’ll likely break it open to have a look.

At least, this is my thinking.

Carrying around a crowbar is a bit more conspicuous anyway.

You don’t have to deter professional thieves for it to be useful.

Well, second time this year mine have been stolen from the same area, so it’s at least plausible the thief knew they were prescription and didn’t care.

They were in a small carrying case , so it’s also possible they just grabbed it  without checking to see what was inside.

Which is the sad part. Thief expected something worth $20 on the street but worthless to him/her and will cost you a couple hundred to replace..

I think this will at least deter the kind of casual thief looking for easy quick grabs.  A pro wouldn't pry the box out, they'd take the whole car.

I’m not trying to discourage you.  I’m just worrying for you, which is pointless or course.

I just need to deter what I suspect is one overzealous member of t he local homeless community.

Yeah, I have an entirely different security strategy for the pros who might take the whole thing.

Ah, yes. Well, and keep an eye out for any of said homeless meandering about with prescription sunglasses.

This probably doesn’t help you, but if you are in Japan on business (or another nation with similar cost I suppose) you can swing by a place like Owndays or Jins and get prescription glasses ( with an exam) for $50 -200 (depending on how expensive the frames are, and what coating you put on the lenses.)
Though maybe you have a good co-pay, and don’t spend too much anyway.

Theft sucks! I remember the pain of having something stolen out of a Jeep. I could have used one of those fancy compartments back in the day. I just started stuffing my stuff up behind the glove box.
